As people of faith, we must speak plainly: Christian teachings can never be used to justify violence, aggression, or war. Reports that extremist Christian rhetoric is being invoked to legitimize military action are profoundly troubling and stand in direct contradiction to the gospel of peace, justice, and compassion revealed in Jesus Christ.
The United Church of Canada rejects all attempts to distort our faith for nationalist or militaristic purposes. Our calling is clear, to pursue peace, uphold human dignity, and work toward a world where love, not fear or domination, guides our actions.
Let us stand firmly against the misuse of Christianity to harm others, and recommit ourselves to the sacred work of peacebuilding in this critical moment.
