Peace, Justice, and Healing
Through the African Great Lakes Initiative of Friends Peace Teams
The African Great Lakes region—Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Uganda, and Kenya—has endured decades of violence, genocide, and displacement. To address these deep wounds, the African Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI) of Friends Peace Teams works with local partners, churches and Quakers to promote nonviolence, healing, and reconciliation rooted in Quaker values.
Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities (HROC)
Supports trauma survivors, including widows, orphans, and single mothers through workshops
that foster healing, trust, and reconciliation after conflict.
Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) & Transformative Mediation, equips communities with conflict resolution skills and Food Security and Savings for lives.
Children’s Peace Libraries and Friends Women Association
With 8 libraries across Rwanda, these spaces empower children through reading, storytelling,
peer mediation, and digital learning tools (iPads & computers). Children gain peace skills and
become mediators in their own schools.
With the Friends Women Association , we have Ntaseka Clinic in Bujumbura, and other women
activities related to empowering women who are rape survivors.
Leadership in Action
David Bucura, AGLI’s Africa Coordinator, is a visionary peacebuilder and founder of Friends Peace House in Rwanda. His leadership has helped expand trauma healing, mediation, and peace education across the region.
Together for a Peaceful Future
AGLI is transforming lives by breaking cycles of violence and nurturing a new generation of peacebuilders. The seeds of peace are growing in hearts, homes, and communities across East and Central Africa.
